Challenges for Prayer

Kabardino-Balkaria is essentially comprised of two ethnic enclaves, the Kabardins (55% Caucasian) and the Balkars (12% Turkic); both are mostly Muslim. There is significant rivalry and tension between them. Russians make up most of the remaining population. Islamist militants (both Chechens and locals) clash with government forces here, although it is much more peaceful than neighbouring republics. The Karbards and Balkars were once Christian but converted to Islam in the 15th Century. ASR, New Way Mission, Light in the East and other groups (both Russian and expat) have ministry here; a revised NT was published by IBT in 2007 and there are several dozen believers among the two namesake peoples of this republic.
