Challenges for Prayer

Uzbekistan is an arena of competing value systems. The term Uzbek means “master of himself”, but many seek to enslave the Uzbeks with their ideologies: warmed-over communism, radical Islamism (especially in the fertile Ferghana valley) and occult-tainted folk Islam. Pray that Uzbeks might find freedom by serving the Lord their Creator and true Master.

Christian media ministries.

a) Bible translation and distribution are ongoing tasks. Pray for the translation of the OT and a more understandable revision of the NT in Uzbek. Pray for the government-recognized Uzbek Bible Society, that it may play a key role in distributing the Bible and printing additional Christian literature. It is allowed to exist, but is heavily restricted in terms of importing or printing Christian materials. Scriptures are not legally for sale anywhere else in the country.

b) Christian literature in Uzbek is desperately needed, but its production or importation is virtually banned by the government. Pray for mother-tongue writers, poets and hymnologists to be raised up and their works printed and distributed.

c) Christian radio is a mixed situation: nearly 200 hours per week, but mostly in Russian and English. There is a little radio (two hours per week by IBRA, TWR and FEBC) in Uzbek, also some in Tajik, Kazakh, Kyrgyz. Access to medium and shortwave radios is sparse; as a result, so is response. Pray for effective ways to communicate the good news by this medium.

d) Video resources. The JESUS film is available in Uzbek, Tajik, Kazakh, Russian and most other languages spoken here. Increasing numbers of Christian films and media resources are available. Pray for their circulation and use. Pray for the creation of video resources that will help evangelize the younger generation.
